oaring local media deals, new arenas and basketballa€™s international popularity continue to push the value of NBA franchises higher.

The average NBA team is worth $1.9 billion, up 13% over last year and three times the level of five years ago.A The New York KnicksA lead the way, worth $4 billion byA Forbesa€™ count, up 11% from a year ago. (And owner James Dolan says hea€™s been offered even more: a cool $5 billion.) The club is tied with the New York Yankees as the second-most-valuable U.S. sports franchises after the Dallas Cowboys, which is worth $5 billion.

The NBA is the hottest sports league right now. Just look at what happened last week: The NFL should command all the attention during Super Bowl week. Instead,A the trade talk of Anthony Davis and Kristaps Porzingis dominated sports fansa€™ social media feeds.

The NBAa€™s rising wealth runs much deeper than just the Knicks. TheA Brooklyn Nets,A Charlotte Hornets,A Dallas MavericksA andA Portland Trail BlazersA all kicked off new local TV deals last season at more than double their previous take. TheA Milwaukee Bucksstarted a lucrative extension in 2018, and new TV deals for theA Chicago BullsA andA San Antonio SpursA begin next season.

On the arena front, the Bucks opened their $524 million building, Fiserv Forum, this season. Moving out of the NBAa€™s third-oldest building is a boon to the Bucksa€™ bottom line, with new revenue opportunities from sponsorships and premium seating. The value of the franchise is $1.35 billion, up 145% since the ownership group bought the team for $550 million in 2014.

TheA Minnesota TimberwolvesA and Utah Jazz completed more than $100 million in renovations to their buildings, and the Atlanta Hawks recently unveiled a $193 million upgrade of their home, State Farm Arena. The renovated buildings will generate significantly more cash for their tenants.

TheA Golden State WarriorsA are leaving Oracle Arena, the NBAa€™s oldest building, next season for the $1 billion Chase Center. The reigning league champs have securedA $2 billion in contractually obligated incomeA from sponsorships, suites and season ticket holder fees for the new arena. Look for the Warriors to challenge the Knicks as the NBAa€™s leading revenue generator.

Investors sniffing around the NBA salivate at the leaguea€™s international prospects, with 300 million basketball players in China and annual revenue growing outside the U.S. at a rate in the high teens.

The sporta€™s global popularity expands the investor pool as well. Witness the 49% stake in the Brooklyn Nets purchased last year byA Alibaba cofounder Joe Tsai. The deal gives Tsai a path to majority control of the team in two years and valued the Nets at an NBA-record $2.3 billion.
